According to the World Health Organization (WHO) report on chronic diseases: “Chronic diseases are the primary cause of death in the world right now, and its effects are steadily increasing.”
In Macau, chronic diseases remain the primary causes of death. The 3 most fatal categories of diseases in 2007 were:
1. Cancer,
2. Diseases of the Circulatory System,
3. Diseases of the Respiratory System.
Most chronic diseases can be avoided or prevented. The three most important factors which increase the risk of contracting such diseases are: 1. An unhealthy diet,
2. Lack of physical exercise、
3. Smoking.
More and more people choose to consume high-fat, high-sugar foods, as well as fast foods and make other unhealthy changes to their eating habits. This, coupled with a lack of physical activity in their daily lives has lead to the continuous increase of the impact of these risk factors.
Of the many factors which increase the risk of contracting chronic diseases, smoking is the main, yet most avoidable one. In response to WHO’s appeal to “Stop the Global Epidemic of Chronic Diseases”, let us jointly bear in mind some key measures we can take to achieve a healthy lifestyle.
healthy lifestyle * Say “No” to both smoking and second-hand smokespan> * Do 30 minutes of moderate physical activity each day * Have a balanced diet, which includes the consumption of 2 fruits and 3 vegetables each day (“Two plus Three Every day”) * Watch your weight * Practice safe sex * Drink alcohol in moderation
The report estimates that approximately 17 million people die prematurely each year due to chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes. A global initiative to prevent the onset of such diseases could save the lives of 36 million people who would otherwise be dead by 2015.
