Causes of colon cancer
Colon cancer results from the abnormal growth of cells in the colon and rectum. These cancer cells continue to grow and spread to other parts of the body.
Colon cancer is the third most common type of cancer amongst men in Macau. The older you get, the greater your chances are of developing this cancer. Therefore men who are 50 years of age or older must take particular attention. Causes include:
。A diet that is high in red and processed meat but low in fibre、
。A lack of physical exercise、
。Family history of colon cancer, colon polyps or certain genetic colon disorders、
。A long-term history of ulcerative colitis, or colon polyps、
。Obesity.
Symptoms of colon cancer
Common symptoms of colon cancer include:
。Blood (either bright or very dark) or large amount of mucus secretions in the stool、
。A change in bowel movement habits such as constipation or diarrhea、
。Persistent urge to have a bowel movement, immediately after having gone to the bathroom、
。Abdominal discomfort (frequent gas pains, bloating, fullness, or stomach cramps)、
。Weight loss without any apparent reason。
Since the above symptoms may be caused by diseases other than colon cancer, you should consult a doctor as soon as something abnormal appears.
Preventative Measures
Your dietary habits are a major factor in preventing colon cancer. By adopting a healthy lifestyle, you can reduce your chances of developing colon cancer.
The WHO has indicated that 43% of cancer cases are preventable. Therefore, you should:
。Eat more fruit, vegetables, grains and cereals、
。Eat less red meat and animal fats、
。Have regular and adequate exercise、
。Drink sensibly and quit smoking、
。Control your weight.
