A Healthy City is one that is continually creating and improving those physical and social environments and expanding those community resources which enable people to mutually support each other in performing all the functions of life and in developing to their maximum potential. (WHO)
Promoting the concept of Healthy City
In order to promote the concept and objectives of Healthy City to the general public and all other sectors of the community, thereby facilitating them to participate in related activities in the future so as to build up Macao into a Healthy City collectively, the Secretariat of the Macao Healthy City Committee held seminars for government departments and schools in 2004 from July and October onwards respectively. Brief introduction to the Macao Healthy City logo

- red represents happiness. It implies the economy of Macao is prospering; it also represents the optimistic spirit of citizens.
- light blue signifies the safe drinking water and satisfactory sewage disposal system in Macao.
- the city contour, which is outlined with simple lines, represents:
- Ancient -- A-Ma Temple and the Ruins of St. Paul’s
- Modern -- tall buildings, big mansions and the Macau Tower
- Chinese -- the arch over the gateway of the A-Ma Temple
- Foreign -- the Ruins of St. Paul’s
- Environmental protection -- trees and flying birds
- Being shone upon by the glorious sunshine, Macao is filled with warmth and vitality
Macao has a long history and is where the East meets the West. The A-Ma Temple and the Ruins of St. Paul’s represent the heritage of traditional Chinese culture and Western culture respectively. The Macau Tower has become a new landmark of Macao; it signifies the flourishing development of the economy and the tourism industry of Macao. Tall buildings indicate that the city planning and infrastructure is consummating gradually, creating a nice environment in which citizens live in peace and enjoy their work. Ecological balance is very important for citizens’ livelihood and also to the protection of the endangered species. Since Macao is located at the junction where migratory birds from the Northern and Southern Hemisphere intersect, environment protection is very important, and for this reason trees and flying birds are added to the logo.
